Betting on the Oscars: Now you can do it in New Jersey

Las Vegas – Perhaps you weren’t sure — or did not care — if Gisele Bundchen’s husband and the New England Patriots won the Super Bowl this month. However, you know why”The Favourite” is a favorite to win an Oscar for best costume design, and you are eager to wager on Lady Gaga snagging some hardware to get her performance in”A Star is Born.”
But for the first time in the U.S., you can legally bet on one of pop culture’s biggest events.
New Jersey is the country’s first nation to allow sportsbooks to accept wagers on the Oscars, following a common practice in Europe and providing Western enthusiasts another option besides informal office pools.
Casinos see it as a way to attract more customers to the sportsbook, in spite of limited bets.
“We have clients that aren’t enormous sports lovers but enjoy playing games such as bingo or roulette with us,” said Mattias Stetz, chief operating officer of Rush Street Interactive, which operates PlaySugarHouse.com at New Jersey. “We believe a new audience may be lovers of the Oscars and want to make their viewing experience much more exciting by putting a wager on their favourite movie.”
